Unaccompanied Minor

UM - (unaccompanied minor) answer is a child travelling without a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult that the child knows. The age requirements that are generally used by the airlines to define the unaccompanied minor are children between the ages of five and eleven years old (and sometimes up to 15 - it is always advisable to contact the airline to make sure that they accept unaccompanied minors as passengers).

From the moment on that you are handing over your child to the airline representative, airline is taking the responsibility over your child care and safety. When making a reservation it is very important to mention that it is a child travelling alone. After arriving at the check-in counter you will be asked to complete a "request for carriage" form, which is attached to an envelope bearing the letters "UM".

 

• The form contains:
  • Your child's identification,
  • Their flight number,
  • The names and contact telephone numbers of people who will meet your child at the destination,
  • Their parent or guardian's authorizing signature

The envelope is always in the care of an agent. It serves as a document holder for your child's passport, airline ticket, emergency numbers, and Customs documentation Your child is then taken under care of airport agent and then when flight cabin crew is ready to receive your child is taken through security control and handed over to the flight attendant.

Same procedure applies after arrival at the destination airport. Airport agent is contacting people meeting your child and after verification of proper identification your child is released from airline care.
